The Pretenders rose to prominence as the punk scene started to fade, becoming an integral part of the early 80’s new wave scene. Lead by the ever-enigmatic Chrissie Hynde, the band caused a stir from their very first single. Hynde had originally moved to England to join a punk band and played with number of groups involved with the scene, including a project lead by the legendary Clash guitarist Mick Jones. The Pretenders only came together after Hynde got attention for demos she recorded on her own in 1978. The band’s first album was a massive hit in both Europe and America. Though the band’s line -up suffered casualties and changes, Hynde remain the driving force and developed an instantly recognizable style , coupling rough-edged music with sweeter girl group vocals and her distinctive sexy neo-goth looks. Chart success came along during the 80’s and 90’s with hits such as Where Has Everybody Gone, Don’t Get Me Wrong, Brass in Pocket and I’ll Stand By You.
